Italian vote heads for stalemate

Berlusconi contests challenger's claim, says his party won Senate
ROME, Italy - Uncertainty was looming in Italy after neck-and-neck election results looked set to stall the formation of a new parliament even as opposition leader Romano Prodi made a disputed claim of victory over Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.
Near-final returns Tuesday put Prodi's center-left coalition narrowly ahead of Berlusconi, but the result appeared to hinge on ballots cast by Italians living abroad.
However, with no clear majority and a yawning divide between parliament's two coalitions, it may fall to Italy's president to form a caretaker government of with the prospect of calling another election.
The uncertainty is expected to undermine international confidence in Italy's economy.

Bird flu confirmed in Czech Rep

The EU reference lab in Britain has confirmed tests indicate a dead swan found in the south of the Czech Republic had the H5N1 bird flu virus, an official has said.
The country's veterinary authority spokesman Josef Duben said the H5N1 virus was detected in a swan found March 22 on the Vltava river near Hluboka, 130 kilometers (80 miles) south of Prague.
Another dead swan found on Saturday near Ceske Budejovice, 150 kilometers (93 miles) south of Prague, tested positive for the H5 virus, and further tests will be conducted to determine whether it had the H5N1 strain, Duben said.

France hit by new mass protests

French transport workers and teachers staged new strikes on Tuesday as students across the country prepared to take to the streets for further mass protests against a deeply unpopular new labor law.
France's ruling conservatives stopped short of agreeing to scrap the hire-and-fire law but, faced with an opinion poll thumbs-down and internal rifts over how to deal with the crisis, signaled they could offer more concessions.
Opponents of the new law said they wanted at least as many people to take to the streets as a week ago, when between 1 million and 3 million people joined the biggest protests the nation had seen for decades.

Some of the Winter Olympic sports

Alpine Skiing
Arguably the most recognizable of the skiing disciplines at the Winter Olympics, the Alpine Skiing includes the downhill, the Super-G, the slalom and the giant slalom. Competition is open to men and women.

Biathlon
Biathlon combines cross-country skiing with shooting. Skiers must fire while in either the prone or standing position at targets 50 meters away. Competition is open to men and women, who compete over courses of different length.

Figure Skating

Another of the more famous of the Winter Olympic sports, figure skaters compete in individual events for men or women or in pairs events for men and women. Skaters must perform routines to set music and interpretative dances to music of their choosing.

Ski Jumping

Skiers gain speed going down a ramp before launching into a jump on either a 90-meter hill or a 120-meter hill. Points are added or deducted if a skier exceeds or falls short of a set point a certain distance from the take-off point. Skiers are also marked on their form in flight and in the landing.

Israeli prime minister has been comatose since stroke

JERUSALEM - Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, who is being treated for a massive stroke, moved his eyelids Monday, his family said, according to a hospital statement.
The report comes a day after Sharon received a tracheotomy to help wean him off a respirator, and his condition remained "critical but stable." A tracheotomy is a surgical incision of the windpipe through the neck to make an opening for a breathing tube.
Sharon, 77, has been comatose since the January 4 stroke that resulted in brain hemorrhaging.

Rink disaster came amid freak snow

VIENNA, Austria - Long and dense snowfalls have brought havoc to southern Germany and Austria, triggering avalanches, felling trees, blocking roads and rail and cutting electricity to thousands of homes.
Rescuers made slow progress trying to reach people still trapped at an ice rink in the German town of Bad Reichenhall where at least 15 people died on Monday when the roof, weighed down by masses of snow, collapsed.
Experts said an unusual mix of warmer weather -- with temperatures just above freezing -- and downfalls lasting for up to 30 hours had led to the chaos in an area used to snowy winters. Some 30 cm (12 inches) has fallen since Monday morning.

The Celts and their New Year

The Celts were the people who lived in Gaul, now called France, and parts of Britain before the Romans arrived there. Their New Year festival was called Samhain. It took place at the end of October, and Samhain means 'summer's end'.
At Samhain, the Celts gathered mistletoe to keep ghosts away, because they believed this was the time when the ghosts of the dead returned to haunt the living.

The Christmas Story

And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David) To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them at the inn. And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them; and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not; for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,
Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
